Istanbul, 13 August 2026
The imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, has joined a newly founded opposition party in Turkey, according to the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
The CHP stated on Wednesday that İmamoğlu's move to the new formation is part of a strategic realignment of the political camp against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Party leader Özgür Özel spoke of a "political signal" to the government. İmamoğlu himself has been in prison for months; a Turkish court had previously upheld his conviction.
Background: İmamoğlu's imprisonment and the allegations
The Turkish government rejected the accusation that İmamoğlu's imprisonment was politically motivated. It pointed to the independence of the judiciary. This position was confirmed by four entities, according to the source material. (Reuters)
