Istanbul, 24 August 2026

A court in Istanbul has handed down lengthy prison sentences in the trial against opposition politicians, while Turkey simultaneously experiences a wave of detentions of opposition mayors.

The verdict marks a provisional climax in a politically charged case that has been followed with great attention in Turkey for months. The defendants were members of the largest opposition party, the CHP, whom the prosecution accused of, among other things, corruption and illegal financial dealings. The defense had rejected the charges and spoken of a politically motivated trial.

The trial was closely watched in Turkey also against the background of a wave of arrests against opposition mayors and the detention of former Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. İmamoğlu is considered a promising presidential candidate of the opposition and was arrested in the spring. His incarceration triggered international criticism and heightened concerns about the democratic foundations of the country.
