Johannesburg, 10 June 2026
In an attack on an informal settlement in the greater Johannesburg area, at least twelve people were killed and nine others injured in the night leading into Wednesday.
Crime Scene and Sequence of Events
As police reported, the perpetrators stormed the settlement shortly before midnight and fired indiscriminately. Security authorities assume that more than ten suspects were dropped off from a minibus near the crime scene. At least twelve people lost their lives, including three women. Nine victims were taken to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds, some of them severe.
The attack occurred in Jumpers, a poor neighbourhood a few kilometres east of downtown Johannesburg. Most of the residents are inhabitants of informal settlements who suffer from high unemployment and severe poverty. In South Africa, criminal gangs repeatedly engage in bloody power struggles as they fight over territory for protection racketeering and drug trafficking. Uninvolved bystanders are often caught in the crossfire.
