Out of fear of xenophobic violence in South Africa, more than 38,000 Malawians have been brought back to their homeland over the past weeks, with six people who were already ill beforehand dying on the journey home.

The Malawian disaster management authority said on Friday that, since July 7, more than 38,000 citizens had been returned from South Africa to their home country by bus nationwide. The operation was running at full tilt, as many migrants feared for their safety following several incidents with a xenophobic background. The authority described it as one of the largest repatriation campaigns Malawi has organized in recent years.

According to the information provided, six people who were already ill before the journey died from the strains of the transport. In total, more than 570 buses were deployed in July to bring the returnees from South Africa across the border into Malawi. On the overland journey, which often lasted several days, many travelers suffered health problems, aggravated by temperatures that were in part cold during the South African winter.
