During the historic visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Syria, two bombs detonated on Tuesday morning near the hotel where he had stayed overnight; Macron continued his schedule.

Explosions Near the Hotel

The Syrian capital Damascus was shaken by two bomb explosions on Tuesday morning at around 10:20 a.m. local time. According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the devices detonated near the «Four Seasons» hotel, where French President Emmanuel Macron had arrived the previous evening for a surprise visit. The background to the attacks remains unclear.

According to the Élysée Palace, the French president was already en route to a meeting with Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the time of the detonations and did not perceive the explosions. AFP reporters said they heard the detonations and saw smoke rising over the surrounding neighborhood. Ambulances rushed to the scene, while security forces blocked several access roads to the area.

Background to the Series of Attacks

According to Syrian authorities, at least three people were killed and 18 others injured in the attacks, including four police officers. The bombs were hidden in a car parked at the roadside and in a trash bin. Security forces discovered the explosive devices and began preparations to defuse them, but the bombs detonated while the work was still underway.
