At Epplesee near Karlsruhe, a 23-year-old man drowned, „der laut Zeugen beim Baden nicht mehr auftauchte", as the German Life Saving Society (Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft) reported. Shortly before, a 74-year-old swimmer could only be recovered dead from the bathing lake in Heddesheim (Rhein-Neckar district).

The DLRG has recorded 43 deaths from swimming accidents in Germany so far this year – five fewer than in the same period last year. According to the DLRG, seven people died in Baden-Württemberg waters last June alone. Baden-Württemberg's figures are thus above the national average this summer.

DLRG warns of risks when swimming

In light of the ongoing heat, the rescue organization is warning of the dangers of unexpectedly cool water temperatures, which can cause cramps even in shallow shoreline areas. The depth and currents in lakes are also often difficult for swimmers to assess. According to experts, jumping from boats without sufficient life jackets carries an additional risk.

Lake Constance is one of Germany's largest and deepest bodies of water and is a popular destination for boat trips during summer heat. On hot days, thousands of swimmers and water sports enthusiasts gather there. Police have called on eyewitnesses and boat operators to report what they saw in order to support the ongoing investigation.
