Two suspects in pretrial detention after body found in Eisenhüttenstadt

A decision on whether the two suspects will be taken into pretrial detention is expected during the course of Thursday. If a judge grants the prosecutor's request, the men will be transferred to a correctional facility. Otherwise, they could remain at large until further investigations are completed, possibly subject to conditions.

Investigations led by the public prosecutor's office

The news of the body found and the subsequent arrests was disseminated by, among others, rbb24.de and the dpa news channel. Antenne Brandenburg and other regional media also reported on the case. The case has attracted attention in the comparatively small town on the German-Polish border, also because the investigators went public with comparatively few details.

Eisenhüttenstadt is located in the Oder-Spree district and, with around 25,000 inhabitants, is one of the larger towns in eastern Brandenburg. Homicide offenses are rare in the region and are generally accompanied intensively by police and prosecutors. Due to the severity of the accusation, a murder commission usually leads the investigations in such cases.

In the hours after the body was found, the Brandenburg police initially secured evidence at the scene and conducted witness interviews. The two suspects were then identified and provisionally arrested. The detention requests now filed are the result of the initial evaluation of these investigative steps.

Possible consequences in the event of a conviction

Joint manslaughter is a serious crime that can be punished by a prison sentence of at least five years. A prerequisite for the detention request is urgent suspicion of having committed the crime and a ground for detention, such as risk of flight or risk of obstruction of justice. However, the final legal classification remains reserved for a later main trial.

The public prosecutor's office announced that it would inform the public about the progress of the proceedings and further findings as soon as this was possible without jeopardizing the ongoing investigations. Until then, the authority asked that speculation be refrained from. The public will be informed of the outcome of the detention decision in due course.
