Two 27-year-old ski tourers from Vienna were buried by a slab avalanche on the Carinthian side of the Grossglockner on Saturday afternoon, 24 May 2026.

The two men were caught in the slide while descending the mountain, according to initial reports. The avalanche, a so-called snow slab, broke loose about 300 meters below the Glocknerbivak, a high-altitude shelter often used by mountaineers.

The accident took place in the area of the Pallavicinirinne, a classic but extremely steep couloir on the Großglockner’s eastern face. This route is well-known among experienced ski tourers for its demanding terrain.

On Saturday afternoon, the slab avalanche completely buried both skiers. The avalanche danger in the region was not exceptionally high, but late-spring conditions can create hidden instabilities due to warming temperatures.
