Two World War bombs defused in Osnabrück: Evacuation in Lokviertel district ended

The evacuation of the affected area was completed around 11:30 a.m., according to the city. Around 1,600 residents had to leave their homes for several hours. Approximately two and a half hours after the completion of the evacuation, safety in the area had been restored, according to the town hall.

Evacuation and safety measures

During the operation, a police helicopter circled over the cordoned-off area. Persons found to be in the evacuation zone without authorization faced a fine of 300 euros. The city set up a support center for those affected, among other places at the Osnabrück-Schinkel comprehensive school, and set up a telephone hotline.

The two bombs were discovered on the grounds of a former freight yard, where a new city district is to be built. Unexploded bombs had been found on the site multiple times in the past. According to the city, there were eight previous clearance operations there, during which a total of 23 bombs were defused.

Lokviertel: Site of previous operations

The largest operation of its kind on the site to date took place in July 2025, when around 20,000 people had to leave their homes, according to the city. The city stated that if the current operation is successfully completed, no further bomb defusals on the Lokviertel site are likely to be necessary. The entire construction site has since been searched for ordnance.

The operation also had significant effects on rail and bus traffic in the region. Osnabrück's main train station was located within the cordoned-off area and was not served by long-distance trains. Deutsche Bahn rerouted several ICE lines.

Impact on rail traffic

ICE connections on the Amsterdam–Bad Bentheim–Münster–Osnabrück–Hanover–Berlin route were affected: the stops in Osnabrück and Bünde were canceled and replaced by Hamm and Münster. On the Berlin–Hanover–Münster–Aachen connection, the stops in Osnabrück, Münster, and Recklinghausen were canceled and replaced by Hamm and Dortmund. Deutsche Bahn recommended that travelers use regional trains between Rheine and Osnabrück main station.

Several bus lines in the city area were rerouted, although the city described these adjustments as minor. Buses to the main train station continued to run, according to their information.

Overall, the operation highlights the ongoing burden on German cities from the remnants of World War II. More than two dozen unexploded bombs have been rendered harmless on the Lokviertel site alone in recent years. The city of Osnabrück had informed the public in advance via its website, affected streets, and the citizen hotline.
