Osnabrück, 31 May 2026

An unexploded American bomb from World War II was discovered in the Lokviertel district of Osnabrück on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,600 people and causing major disruptions to long-distance rail services.

The city confirmed that one of two suspected ordnance points at the Lokviertel construction site near the main train station is an unexploded bomb. The device was identified as an American bomb weighing around 50 kilograms and equipped with a tail impact fuze.

Evacuation and Safety Measures

The evacuation of the affected area was completed by approximately 11:30 a.m., two and a half hours after residents were required to leave their homes. Evacuation buses began transporting people out of the danger zone from 7:00 a.m., and anyone remaining in the restricted area after 9:00 a.m. risked a fine of 300 euros.
