The U.S. national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, prompting warnings from policy analysts that the mounting burden is raising living costs and crowding out federal investments.
The U.S. national debt has crossed $40 trillion, according to data compiled by the Treasury Department and tracked across multiple sources. The milestone underscores how rapidly federal borrowing has accelerated in recent years and has drawn sharp warnings from budget analysts who study the long-term trajectory of American public finances.
Margaret Spellings, President and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center, said the federal debt is already raising the cost of living and crowding out other spending and investments, threatening the economy and long-term prosperity of Americans. "La deuda federal ya está elevando el costo de vida y desplazando otros gastos e inversiones, amenazando nuestra economía y la prosperidad a largo plazo de los estadounidenses," Spellings said.
