Taipei, 01 June 2026

Uber and the Israeli artificial intelligence company Autobrains announced a joint robotaxi program in Munich on Monday at the GTC technology conference in Taipei.

The initiative will build a fleet of Level 4 autonomous vehicles in the Bavarian capital. At this level of autonomy, no driver attention is required; the taxi operates without a driver, and passengers can sleep, work, or watch films during the ride. However, Level 4 vehicles are restricted to a predefined operational area, such as within Munich's Mittlerer Ring or on specific highway sections.

How the Technology Works

The technological foundation of the project is the computing platform of chip giant Nvidia. The partnership adopts an OEM-agnostic model, meaning the system can be integrated into existing series-production vehicles from various manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or Volkswagen. This approach represents a departure from customized specialty vehicles used by competitors like Waymo, a subsidiary of Google, which rely on highly individualized fleets with complex rooftop sensor arrays.
