Uber receives approval for robotaxi service in London

The partnership with Lucid gives Uber access to a vehicle platform for electric cars. Lucid recently attracted attention by expanding its model range and is regarded as a technologically ambitious manufacturer in the premium segment. Nuro contributes the autonomous driving software and already has experience in deploying self-driving delivery vehicles.

From the US, there had recently been increasing reports that autonomous vehicle fleets there are reaching scaling limits. Observers therefore see the UK and other European markets as a testing ground for internationally operating robotaxi providers. London offers particularly suitable conditions with its dense city traffic as well as clear regulatory frameworks.

Impact on Uber drivers

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi had emphasized in earlier statements that autonomous vehicles could reduce costs per ride in the long term and improve the availability of mobility services. The London license now granted is considered an important milestone for this strategy.

Authorities in London had revised their guidelines for autonomous vehicles in recent months, formulating clear safety standards. Applicants must, among other things, demonstrate that their systems are able to respond safely to unforeseen traffic situations. Uber has met these requirements, according to the company.

With regard to its own drivers, Uber announced its intention to shape the transition in a cooperative manner. Uber's London license is therefore also being watched in the context of global competition.
