Ukrainian drone attack on port in southern Russia claims one fatality

The incident is part of a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian rear areas. Ukraine has intensified its attacks inside Russia in recent months. It justifies the attacks as retaliation for the massive Russian bombing raids on Ukraine in the conflict that has been ongoing for more than four years.

Background: Expansion of Ukrainian attacks

Kyiv emphasizes that the Ukrainian military is primarily targeting military facilities and energy infrastructure in order to deprive the Kremlin's war chest of important revenues from the sale of fossil fuels. This account could not initially be independently verified.

The attack on the Temryuk port comes at a time of particularly high civilian casualties on the Ukrainian side. In May of this year, at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured, according to a report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. UN report: Sharply rising casualty figures

The scale of the violence becomes clear in comparison to the previous year. According to the UN, the number of injured or killed civilians in Ukraine in May was 93 percent higher than in the same period the previous year.

Casualty figures also rose compared to the previous month: Compared to April, the total number of injured and killed in Ukraine increased by 23 percent. The United Nations thus sees a persistently critical situation for the civilian population.

Appeal by the UN Human Rights Commissioner

Volker Türk had already called on Moscow and Kyiv to show restraint at the end of May. "Resume the negotiations and end the suffering," Türk demanded. "International humanitarian law requires the parties to the conflict to take all practically possible precautions to prevent harm to civilians," he further stated.

The Ukrainian side points to international law and the right to self-defense to justify its attacks. Russia, in turn, regularly describes attacks on its own territory as terrorism and announces retaliation. No direct statement from the Russian leadership in Moscow on the incident in Temryuk was initially available.

Reactions and open questions

It also remained unclear initially whether the affected port railway station is a civilian or military-used facility. The Kerch Strait is a strategically important connection between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea; ships transport oil and other goods via this corridor, among other things.

Observers interpret the rising casualty figures and the expansion of attacks as a sign of ongoing escalation. At the same time, humanitarian organizations warn of a further deterioration of the situation for the civilian population on both sides if the fighting is not contained.
