Attacks on the Oil Industry

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attacks on the two refineries. Fires broke out at the Saratov refinery on the Volga and at the Nizhnekamsk refinery in Tatarstan, as reported by Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels. Such reports from social networks cannot be independently verified.

In Saratov, located roughly 800 kilometers from Ukraine, one man was killed, according to Governor Roman Busargin. Otherwise, he confirmed only damage to civilian infrastructure. The refinery in Nizhnekamsk lies approximately 1,200 kilometers from Ukrainian territory and is therefore considered one of the deepest targets pushed into the country's interior so far in the Ukrainian campaign.

A fire was also reported at a military airfield in the Voronezh region south of Moscow. Details on possible damage or casualties at the airfield were not initially released. Zelensky made no statements regarding specific hits or losses in Voronezh and Bashkortostan.

Russian Account of Interception Figures

The Defense Ministry in Moscow announced that by morning, 415 enemy drones had been intercepted over Russian territory. Such figures cannot be independently verified, as the Deutschlandfunk report expressly acknowledges. The Moscow authorities have been speaking for weeks of growing Ukrainian drone numbers.

Their counterattacks on the Russian oil industry have already caused a fuel crisis in many regions. Market observers have for months pointed to rising gasoline prices and shortages in individual Russian federal subjects, which are linked to the accumulation of Ukrainian attacks on processing facilities.

Simultaneous Russian Attacks on Ukraine

At the same time, Russia continued its attacks on the neighboring country. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least seven people were killed when missiles and drones struck, among other places, the capital Kyiv. The city of Mykolaiv in the south of the country and the Zaporizhzhia region were also targets of the Russian attacks.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion for more than four years. During this time, both sides have expanded attacks on each other's hinterland. The Ukrainian strategy is visibly aimed at weakening the Russian fuel supply and thereby the revenues of the state budget.

The Saratov region southeast of Moscow has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian drones, as has the Tatarstan region further east. The Nizhnekamsk facility is one of the largest petrochemical complexes in Russia and a central component of the domestic fuel supply.

In Russian regional channels, reports accumulated over recent months of "drone nights" in which dozens of aircraft were intercepted or reported in individual regions. Russian air defenses operate nationwide according to their own accounts, with the effectiveness of individual interception systems barely verifiable from independent sources.

On the Ukrainian side, the question of the impact of the drone campaign remains controversial. Supporters see the attacks on the oil industry as an effective means of putting Moscow under pressure without Western arms deliveries. Critics point out that civilian casualties, such as the man killed in Saratov, could increase the political burden of the campaign.

Open Questions and Lack of Confirmation

The reports of attacks in Bashkortostan, another region deep in the Russian hinterland, could not initially be confirmed by independent sources. Zelensky mentioned them as part of his general enumeration, without providing details. Should the attack be confirmed, it would once again extend the range achieved by Ukrainian drones to date.

The overall situation makes clear that the conflict is escalating on multiple fronts despite diplomatic efforts. While Ukraine is banking on weakening the Russian energy infrastructure, Russian attacks are visibly aimed at the Ukrainian capital, civilian infrastructure, and energy supply. Both sides use the media dissemination of drone attacks also for domestic political mobilization.
