According to UN figures, the 724 vehicles are humanitarian trucks intended to deliver urgently needed aid supplies to the neighboring country. Since the border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been only partially usable since the fighting, the international community had expected significant delays in supplying the Afghan population.

According to the United Nations, the aid deliveries are being processed through established UN corridors, involving, among others, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). These institutions coordinate the distribution of goods to needy families, whose supply situation has worsened after months of clashes.

The background to the extensive border closure is fighting between Pakistani security forces and armed groups on the Pakistani side, which has significantly impaired cross-border traffic. Deliveries for humanitarian purposes were only possible in exceptional cases in recent weeks. According to Yahya, the Pakistani government, in coordination with UN organizations, permitted a temporary opening of the crossings for the aid convoys.

For the UN, the renewed cross-border supply is an important signal to the Afghan population, whose need for food, medicine, and winter-proof equipment continues to be high according to humanitarian assessments. Reports of supply bottlenecks had concerned both UN representatives and Afghan aid organizations in recent weeks.

Mo Yahya described the Pakistani decision as a sign of solidarity and practical support for the people of Afghanistan. The UN would continue to document the ongoing convoys and advocate for regular humanitarian corridors, he announced.

Significance for the population's supply

The United Nations released the announcement on Sunday; according to UN spokespersons, it is based on the organization's own records at the border crossings as well as reports from the aid organizations involved. The convoys are to continue in the coming days, provided the security situation allows.

International observers view the event as a rare example of humanitarian cooperation functioning in the region despite military tensions. The UN had previously pointed out several times the need for unimpeded aid deliveries, calling on both Islamabad and Afghan authorities to cooperate.
