Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon surpassed the previous record for the longest time without conceding a goal at a FIFA World Cup in the Round of 16 match against Austria and now stands at 519 minutes.

The previous record had stood for 25 years. It was set by Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga at the 1990 World Cup held in Italy. His streak of 517 minutes stretched from the opening match against Austria to the semifinal against Argentina.

Simon, who normally plays professionally in goal for Athletic Bilbao, began his own historic streak at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Back then, he conceded the goal by Ao Tanaka in the 51st minute during the final group-stage match against Japan – the final score was 1:2.

The start of the streak
