Unemployment in Austria has reached a new record high with 381,200 people affected, while AK President Renate Anderl criticises the raising of the women's retirement age as a driving factor.
Peak of Unemployment
The unemployment figures in Austria have continued to rise, reaching a new record high with 381,200 registered unemployed people. The development affects men and women alike, with the number of affected women increasing particularly sharply. The Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce) and the Arbeitsmarktservice (AMS / Public Employment Service) are facing a growing challenge in restructuring the labour market.
In a statement, AK President Renate Anderl pointed to a direct link between the raising of the women's retirement age and rising unemployment among older women. She said verbatim: "Seit der Anhebung des Frauenpensionsalters wächst die Zahl der arbeitslosen Frauen über 60 Jahre deutlich." She coupled this with a fundamental criticism of retirement policy: "Wer ein höheres Pensionsantrittsalter fordere, müsse auch die Bedingungen schaffen, dass die Beschäftigung überhaupt möglich sei", so Anderl.
