Geneva, 11 June 2026

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) presented its annual "Global Trends" report on Thursday, according to which the number of displaced people worldwide has fallen by around four percent to 41.6 million for the first time in ten years.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, a total of almost 118 million people worldwide are currently displaced. The decline of around four percent is mainly attributable to return movements in several countries. Particularly high numbers of returnees – both refugees and internally displaced people – were recorded in 2024 in Afghanistan, Syria and individual regions of Sudan.

In the past year, more than 10 million internally displaced people and almost 4.4 million people who had fled abroad returned to their regions of origin. This brought worldwide return movements to the second-highest level since data collection began 60 years ago. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees emphasised, however, that many of these returnees did not go back voluntarily. This applies especially to Afghanistan. Many refugees were once again forcibly displaced from Iran and Pakistan – back to Afghanistan, says Salih.
