Berlin, 16 August 2026
Germany is withdrawing or limiting the protection status of additional Syrian nationals, including people whose asylum proceedings have been pending for more than 21 months, according to broadcaster BR24.
Background
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has been stepping up reviews of protection granted to Syrians in Germany, with growing numbers of cases ending in a loss of status, BR24 reported on 16 August 2026. The broadcaster framed the developments in the context of a changing situation in Syria.
According to the figures cited by BR24, two main groups are at the centre of the latest withdrawals. The first includes people whose asylum proceedings have already lasted longer than 21 months, or cases in which a court has ordered the Bamf to issue a decision because the agency failed to act.
