Germany granted large numbers of Syrians temporary protection in the years following the civil war, and the debate over the extent of those protections has intensified as conditions inside Syria shift. Why the backlog matters

Migration officials in several German states have also been reassessing existing Syrian cases as part of routine protection reviews that weigh current conditions against the original grounds for asylum.

German media have reported over recent months that the number of Syrians returning voluntarily from Germany has also been rising, although nationwide figures have not been consistently published. Aid groups say departures depend heavily on access to housing, healthcare documentation and re-entry papers.

Appeals and next steps

The latest BR24 report does not include individual case figures or comment from the Bamf. It frames the withdrawals as part of an administrative adjustment to the new situation in Syria rather than a wholesale policy reversal.

The agency has previously stressed that decisions on protection remain individual and that appeals remain possible under German asylum law. Rights groups have urged the government to ensure that any returns are voluntary and that vulnerable people are not included in the current cohort of withdrawals.
