All teams compete with the same robot model: EngineAI's T800, which is provided to participants free of charge. The unit price is approximately US$40,500. The humanoid robot stands around 173 centimeters tall and weighs between 75 and 85 kilograms.

Technically, the T800 features 29 movable joints, along with panels made of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, a modular solid-state battery architecture, and a perception system with 360-degree radar. According to the manufacturer, the joints achieve a torque of up to 450 Newton meters. An active cooling system is said to enable continuous operation under high load for up to four hours.

Battle for the Head

In the fights, the machines operate largely autonomously, reacting to the situation rather than following a fixed script. The T800 robots possess 29 degrees of freedom, allowing them to execute various kicks and punches. However, observers frequently noted uncoordinated movements and missed strikes.

In the opening match, a white robot named "White Eagle" struck its black opponent "Matador" with a high kick to the head. The struck robot's head initially came loose from its mount, dangled loosely from the torso during the continued exchange of blows, and ultimately fell off completely after the robot fell and pinned it under its own body weight.

Economic Background

The machine continued to fight even without a firmly attached head, punching and kicking toward its opponent and attempting to get back up after the fall. Once the headless robot was no longer able to stand, it was carried away, while its opponent struck victory poses. The winner "White Eagle" subsequently performed a kind of victory dance in front of the audience.

Footage of the fight was disseminated by, among others, the local news channel Shenzhen Story on YouTube. Coverage points out that the path to combat-ready fighting robots still appears long, given the frequently uncoordinated movements.

Field testing under such conditions could significantly shorten technology iteration cycles, argues Tian Feng, former dean of the Intelligence Industry Research Institute at SenseTime. The humanoid robot market in China is expected to grow to a volume of 870 billion yuan by 2030, according to the Chinese Institute of Electronics.

According to EngineAI, the URKL is the first freestyle combat league for full-sized humanoid robots. With its blend of athletic competition and technical field testing, the manufacturer aims to accelerate the development of humanoid platforms.
