A US federal judge has declared the blanket and indefinite suspension of processing Green Card, work permit, and naturalization applications by the immigration authority USCIS unlawful.

The judge at the federal district court, John J. McConnell, ruled that the measures taken by the US immigration authority (USCIS) violate current law. In his written opinion, he stated that the authority's actions had plunged the lives of countless immigrants into an uncertain legal limbo.

Specifically, the judge objected that USCIS had put all final decisions on Green Cards, work permits, and naturalizations for people from 39 countries on hold last winter. Furthermore, the authority ordered a general halt to all asylum decisions, regardless of the applicants' country of origin.
