US government expands launch rights for commercial rockets

The new rules are intended to further reinforce this dynamic.

The government is also justifying the move with strategic goals: a higher launch frequency strengthens national security, secures technological leadership, and supports planned missions to the Moon and, prospectively, to Mars. In addition, dependence on foreign providers will be reduced.

Criticism on environment and safety

Critics, on the other hand, warn of an increase in space debris and rising burdens on neighboring communities around the launch sites. Environmental organizations are calling for binding requirements for fuel emissions and independent oversight of the growing number of launches.
