US government seeks to exempt private spaceflight from environmental regulations

At present, US companies, including Elon Musk's space company SpaceX, dominate the global market for space launches. The government argues that reducing bureaucratic burdens is intended to strengthen the industry and accelerate innovation.

Competition with China

In the US government's assessment, China is making rapid progress in the area of space launches. The deregulation is therefore explicitly justified as a measure to secure US technological and economic leadership in space.

Critics, however, warn that exemption from environmental requirements could have negative effects on ecosystems. The Endangered Species Act protects threatened animal and plant species whose habitats could be impacted by rocket launches and the expansion of spaceports.
