One unnamed senior official stated that the government would "do everything necessary to ensure that only those who are legally admitted under US law and pose no threat remain in the United States."

Critics fear that the planned mass revocation could take place without sufficient case-by-case review. Immigration rights organizations point to cases in which asylum applications remain open simply because of long processing times or missing documents. Those affected could be deported to their countries of origin without prior hearings, where, according to aid organizations, they face persecution.

The plan is also controversial among Republicans in Congress. While hardliners in the Trump camp welcome the move as long overdue, more moderate lawmakers warn of an overload of the immigration authorities and of diplomatic rifts with countries of origin. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott merely stated that the department would "continue to comply with all applicable laws," without addressing individual cases or the number of potentially affected people. Former Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, currently in a private role, also did not respond to a request for comment.
