A court in the US state of Massachusetts has overturned the requirement to pay a $100,000 application fee (approximately €87,000) for the H-1B skilled worker visa.
The introduction of the fee for H-1B visas had caused particular concern in the technology industry. The US tech sector relies heavily on foreign specialists brought into the country through this program.
This work visa allows US companies to bring highly qualified employees, such as programmers, into the country for several years. H-1B visas are issued to, among others, computer scientists, engineers, and scientists. They have a term of three years but can be extended to six years.
What is the H-1B visa?
Before the Trump administration raised the fee to $100,000, several thousand dollars had been due. The fees were comparatively low until Trump's $100,000 decree, amounting to between several hundred and several thousand dollars. Their amount depended, among other things, on the size of the respective company.
