Washington, June 3, 2026
The US government under President Donald Trump on Monday dropped its plans for a compensation fund from the Department of Justice worth around $1.8 billion, after the initiative had met with sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.
Background of the Settlement
The Department of Justice announced the reversal on the platform X, simultaneously stating that it would respect a court decision from Virginia that had previously put a temporary halt on the fund. A federal judge in Alexandria had issued a preliminary injunction on Friday to prevent money from flowing irrevocably from the fund before the case is finally resolved. A hearing had been scheduled for June 12.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told a House of Representatives committee that the department would not pursue the fund. He stated verbatim: "We will not be pursuing the fund." The White House referred inquiries to the Department of Justice's statement published on X. Trump himself did not publicly comment on the move on Monday evening.
