The United States has imposed sanctions on Cuba's state oil company Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced via the platform X, escalating Washington's economic pressure on Havana.

Rubio said the move was designed to weaken the Cuban government financially. According to the announcement, US citizens are now prohibited from engaging in trade with CUPET, and persons outside the United States may also face sanctions if they conduct business with the company. The State Department framed the designation as part of a broader effort to starve the Cuban state of the resources it needs to maintain control.
