American forces struck bridges and military infrastructure in southern Iran on Friday, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks against U.S. allies in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman that host American military bases.
The U.S. military said the strikes on Iran are aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities and holding Iran accountable for recent attacks on commercial shipping. According to Iranian accounts, the U.S. targets included six bridges in Hormozgan province facing the Strait of Hormuz, as well as power infrastructure. The overnight U.S. strikes appeared to have destroyed a maritime control tower in the Iranian port of Chabahar in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared a photo on social media of the bombed-out tower collapsing.
