Washington, 21 August 2026
The US Justice Department announced on 21 August 2026 in Washington that it was ending investigations into TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance over allegations that they collected personal data from children under 13 without parental consent.
Authorities had accused TikTok and ByteDance of gathering personal data from users under 13 without parental consent. The investigations have now been dropped. The Justice Department justified its decision, among other things, by pointing to a change in ownership of TikTok's US business and a revision of its data protection practices.
