Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed in a US case concerning the effects of social media use on children with several states to a settlement totaling nearly $16.7 billion.

Background of the case

According to the underlying notification, the settlement amount of approximately $16.7 billion is the result of a comprehensive settlement between the company and a group of states that had sued Meta. At the center of the case is the question of the extent to which the company's platforms are alleged to have led young users into addictive behavioral patterns.

The case was pursued through a coordinated lawsuit by several US states; the underlying reports particularly highlighted the states of California and New Mexico. The states accused Meta of deploying mechanisms in its products designed to bind children and young people particularly strongly to the platforms. Among other arguments, the plaintiffs contend that certain design decisions — such as endless feeds, autoplay, and personalized recommendations — keep young users on the apps for excessive periods of time.
