The unemployment rate remained virtually unchanged in July at 4.2 percent, according to the Department of Labor. Labor force participation edged down, while average hourly wages rose somewhat more strongly than expected. Economists emphasize that monthly fluctuations are normal and that a single report need not indicate a fundamental trend reversal.

Signs of an Economic Slowdown

At the same time, Germany's exports rose by 3.7 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office. The momentum of German exports stands in contrast to the recent developments in the US labor market and could further fuel the debate over economic differences between the major Western economies.

Trump and his economic advisor had emphasized in the past that the recovery launched under the previous administration would continue. The July report calls that line into question. Even though the May and June figures were revised slightly downward retroactively, the July decline stood out.

Analysts also point to the role of US tariff policy as a potential drag on businesses and investment. Higher import tariffs and uncertainties over future trade rules may have led companies to postpone new hires. According to experts, the exact causes will only become clear upon a closer analysis of the sector figures.

The Federal Reserve thus faces a difficult balancing act: on the one hand, the weaker labor market signals room for interest rate cuts; on the other, inflation remains stubbornly elevated. Observers expect that the upcoming economic data — including consumer prices and the next labor market report — will significantly determine the direction of monetary policy.
