Washington, 16 July 2026

The US government published new regulations on Thursday that impose a time limit on the stay of foreign students, exchange students, and journalists in the US.

According to the new rules published on Thursday, foreign students with a student visa should not be allowed to stay in the US for longer than four years. For foreign journalists, a maximum duration of 240 days will apply in the future. Visas for Chinese journalists are to be limited to 90 days.

Previously, the US issued visas to foreign students for the duration of their studies. For foreign journalists, visas are currently generally granted for five years. Students were officially allowed to remain in the country for the duration of their education. Their holders were not permitted to enter the US for a fixed period, but rather for "Duration of Status" – the duration of their status.
