The United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, a step that Damascus hopes will unlock foreign investment as the country's leadership works to stabilize rule after years of conflict.
The delisting, announced by the State Department in Washington, ends a designation that had hung over Syria for decades and had effectively blocked many Western companies and banks from engaging with the Syrian government and its partners. Officials in Damascus had lobbied intensively for the move, arguing that the label was no longer justified given the changes inside the country since the ouster of the government.
Before the US delisting, interest from foreign companies had grown. Syrian officials have pointed to preliminary discussions with firms in the Gulf and elsewhere as evidence that a sanctions-easing process could deliver concrete economic benefits if accompanied by the terrorism-list removal.
