The US Senate has passed a legislative package that provides for new sanctions against Russia while also formulating exceptions for countries with lower energy imports from Russia.

The Senate in Washington voted in favor of the sanctions package, which targets Russian energy exports and the business world surrounding the Kremlin. The vote took place against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the debate over pressure on allied states to reduce their dependence on Russian energy.

At the heart of the law is a sanctions mechanism directed against countries that continue to purchase Russian natural gas on a significant scale. However, the regulatory framework provides for exceptions: countries whose imports account for less than 15 percent of Russian natural gas exports over a twelve-month period and which simultaneously take measures to reduce these purchases are to be spared from the punitive measures.
