Washington, 29 August 2026
The United States, South Korea and Japan will hold a trilateral military exercise, reviving a three-way defence partnership that officials have framed as a response to persistent security challenges posed by North Korea.
The drill, dubbed Freedom Edge, brings together forces from the three allies for a multi-domain exercise spanning air, sea and other operational areas. It marks a continuation of a format that Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have used in recent years to signal coordination in the face of North Korean missile and nuclear programmes. The exercise is scheduled to take place in the Pacific region, though specific dates and locations have not been publicly detailed in the initial announcement.
