The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected a plan by US President Donald Trump to more tightly restrict mail-in voting in the upcoming midterm elections.

With its decision, the court struck down an attempt by the Trump administration that had aimed to limit the use of mail-in ballots in the congressional elections. The justices ruled that the planned measures would exceed the powers of the executive branch.

The Trump administration had argued that greater control over mail-in voting was necessary to strengthen confidence in the integrity of elections. Critics in the House of Representatives as well as several states rejected this argument, calling it an unnecessary restriction of the right to vote.
