President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States will permit tariff-free imports of up to 300,000 tonnes of ground beef over the next 90 days, a step he framed as a response to high meat prices ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said the temporary import window was intended to give American consumers relief at the grocery store. He did not identify which countries would supply the beef, but stated that exporters had committed to sell the product at 25 per cent below prevailing US market prices. The figure cited for the volume of imports — 300,000 tonnes — was presented as a one-time ceiling rather than an ongoing quota.
