BERLIN, May 1, 2026 US to withdraw 5000 troops from Germany The United States has ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 military personnel from Germany, marking a significant reduction in its European troop presence.
Troop Levels and Historical Context
As of mid-April 2026, approximately 86,000 U.S. troops were stationed across Europe, with about 39,000 of those deployed in Germany, according to U.S. military officials. This latest withdrawal represents roughly 13% of the total U.S. forces currently based in Germany.
The move follows a pattern of troop reductions initiated during the Trump administration. In late 2025, Congress implemented a security mechanism limiting how far troop levels could fall in Europe. The legislation stipulates that the total number of U.S. forces permanently assigned to the U.S. European Command's area of responsibility cannot remain below 76,000 for more than 45 consecutive days.
