Santa Clara, July 2, 2026

The U.S. men's national soccer team has defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 (1:0) in the Round of 16 match at the World Cup in Santa Clara and has thus advanced to the next round of the tournament.

In front of 68,827 spectators at the Super Bowl stadium in Santa Clara, home of the San Francisco 49ers, goals from Folarin Balogun (45th minute) and Malik Tillman (82nd minute) decided the match in favor of Mauricio Pochettino's team. Four fighter jets had flown over the open stadium shortly before kickoff, and the fans in the stadium had been chanting 'USA, USA' around two hours before the match.

The opening phase, however, belonged to the underdog, who was participating in Bosnia-Herzegovina for the first time since 2014 and only the second time ever at a World Cup. Ermedin Demirovic from VfB Stuttgart missed an early chance for the Bosnians, before Kerim Alajbegovic failed to convert a direct shot from a corner past U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese.
