Washington, July 4, 2026
The United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence with an elaborate program of events in Washington on July 4, 2026, while Chancellor Merz and President Steinmeier congratulated President Trump.
On this day in 1776, delegates of the 13 American colonies in North America had adopted the Declaration of Independence, by which they separated themselves as the United States of America from Great Britain. For the 250th anniversary, the organizers put together an extensive program that shaped the festive day in the US capital throughout the entire day.
According to the organizers, more than 30 flyovers are scheduled beginning shortly after 1:00 p.m. US Eastern Time (7:00 p.m. CEST). These also included flights involving Air Force One, the US presidential aircraft. The events extended across multiple locations in Washington, including the National Mall and the area around the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial.
Fireworks and flight demonstrations as highlights
The highlight in the evening was a large fireworks display: 850,000 fireworks at ten locations, including the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial and near the Potomac River, were to be set off within approximately 40 minutes. With this, the organizers said they intended to stage a fireworks display of previously unheard-of scale.
