Used Cars Cheaper in Austria, Electric Vehicles See Strong Gains

Compared with June of the previous year, the price fell by 1,600 euros. Nikolaus Menches, head of AutoScout24 Austria, sees a clear trend in this: demand for pure E-cars in June 2026 was 40 percent above the level at the beginning of the year, as he calculates.

This shift is at the expense of combustion engines. Interest in diesel fell by 20 percent, while gasoline models saw a decline of 15 percent. Menches said this shows that preferences in the market are "spürbar verschieben".

E-Cars on the Rise

A new picture is also emerging among manufacturers on the platform. Among pure E-cars, European providers lead with 55 percent of total demand, while Chinese manufacturers account for ten percent. Among brands, Tesla is ahead of BMW and Volkswagen.

The concentration on a few brands underscores that the Austrian used car market for E-cars has so far been dominated by established manufacturers, while new providers from China are only gradually gaining a foothold.

Overall, the development shows that consumers in Austria in 2026 are paying more attention to price while at the same time reconsidering their choice of powertrain. The price decline for combustion engines coincides with growing skepticism toward diesel and gasoline.

For buyers, the combination of falling prices and rising E-car demand means that the selection and supply structure on the used car market will continue to change. How sustainable the trend is will become clear in the coming months.
