Vatican City, 02 July 2026
The Vatican declared the Society of St. Pius X in schism on Thursday and excommunicated six of its bishops, one day after the traditionalist group consecrated four new bishops without papal consent at its seminary in Econe, Switzerland.
The decree, issued by the Vatican's doctrinal office, targets the four newly consecrated bishops as well as the two existing bishops who presided over the ceremony. According to the Holy See, consecrating bishops without papal approval constitutes a direct act of insubordination and incurs automatic excommunication. The Vatican described the ceremony as "an act of schismatic nature."
