Vatican excommunicates six SSPX bishops after unauthorized consecrations in Switzerland

The consecration took place on Wednesday at the SSPX's Econe seminary in southwest Switzerland during a five-hour Mass attended by approximately 15,500 people and their children. The Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the society's superior, delivered the homily and defended the action as a "state of necessity" to minister to the society's faithful.

Background of the schism

In his homily, Pagliarani pushed back against accusations of disloyalty to Rome. "We are accused of not respecting the pope. But it is precisely because we love the pope as the vicar of Christ, as the head of the church, that we don't want to see the pope humiliated anymore, on the side of false shepherds representing false religions," he said.

Pope Leo XIV had personally urged the SSPX to postpone the consecrations for the sake of church unity. An American who has made reconciliation with traditionalist and conservative Catholics a priority, Leo pleaded with the society not to proceed. The SSPX went ahead anyway.

Beyond the six bishops, the Vatican warned that lay Catholics who "adhere formally" to the SSPX are also considered schismatic and excommunicated. The decree further declared SSPX sacraments of confession and marriage invalid, sharpening the break between Rome and the traditionalist society.

Scope of the excommunication

The SSPX was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the 1960s meetings that transformed the Church's relations with other Christians, Jews, and people of other faiths and permitted Mass in the vernacular rather than Latin. The society celebrates the ancient Latin Mass and positions itself as an ultraconservative breakaway from mainstream Catholicism.

Tensions over episcopal consecrations are not new. In 1988, Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal consent, prompting their automatic excommunication, which Pope Benedict XVI later lifted in 2009 as part of an outreach initiative. The current dispute is the most serious rupture since that reconciliation effort.

What comes next

According to SSPX statistics, the society now has six bishops, 751 priests, 264 seminarians training in five seminaries, 145 religious brothers, 88 oblates, and 250 religious sisters drawn from 50 nationalities. The size of the community explains both Rome's concern and the Vatican's attempt to draw a firm line.

The decree escalates a confrontation that has been building since the SSPX announced its intention to expand its hierarchy. By declaring not just individual bishops but the society itself to be in schism, the Vatican has signaled that further reconciliation will require the SSPX to reverse course on unauthorized consecrations.

It remained unclear on Thursday whether the SSPX would seek a negotiated resolution or press ahead in defiance of Rome. The society's leadership has framed its actions as a defense of tradition, while the Vatican maintains that any valid episcopal consecration requires papal mandate.
