Karlsruhe, 30 July 2026

The Verdi union has filed a lawsuit with the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe against the Bavarian regulation that permits the sale of food and other goods on up to 40 Sundays and public holidays per year in many tourist, spa, and pilgrimage destinations.

What is the lawsuit about?

The Verdi union is challenging a provision that the Bavarian state parliament passed last year. Under it, shops in municipalities designated as excursion, spa, or pilgrimage destinations may sell food and so-called tourist-relevant product groups on up to 40 Sundays and public holidays per year. According to estimates relied upon by Verdi, roughly a quarter of Bavarian cities and municipalities fall under this regulation.
