Politicians from the CDU and FDP have welcomed the German Retail Association's (Hauptverband des Deutschen Einzelhandels) push for more liberal store opening hours on Sundays, while the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Verdi trade union are warning against a weakening of Sunday protections.
The background to the dispute is plans by the black-red coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD to extend Sunday opening hours for bakeries and confectioneries. According to a resolution paper, the new rules are to take effect at the turn of the year. The retail association has long been calling for a comprehensive liberalization of Sunday opening and complains that a legal ban on store openings is increasingly weakening inner cities.
