VGT Levels Grave Accusations After Discovery of Starved Pigs in Lower Austria

The FPÖ responded to the report, calling the events "monstrous." Representatives of the party demanded a full investigation and raised the question of the responsibility of the inspection authorities. The debate quickly shifted to how such conditions could go undetected over an extended period.

The ratio shows that the density of inspections in a large rural state like Lower Austria is barely sufficient to investigate every suspected case in a timely manner.

The case from the Amstetten district fits into a growing number of reports of alleged animal cruelty in agriculture that have been uncovered in recent years through animal welfare investigations and press research. Animal welfare organizations see this as a sign that existing inspection mechanisms are reaching their limits when personnel and financial resources are lacking.

The VGT announced that it would closely monitor the results of the ongoing investigations and continue to document the responsible authorities. If the suspicion is substantiated, the organization expects criminal prosecution as well as a review of the farm's operating license. The announced vigil is also intended to keep the issue alive in the public eye.

Farmer Georg Prinz, whose name was mentioned in the course of media coverage, has not publicly commented on the accusations so far. A statement from the district chamber of agriculture was also not available at the time of reporting. According to the VGT, the public prosecutor's office is reviewing a possible initial suspicion of animal cruelty.
