After severe allegations of animal cruelty came to light, authorities in Lower Austria have shut down a pig breeding farm where, according to investigators, hundreds of animals died in agonizing conditions.
The operation in the district of Amstetten is at the center of an investigation being conducted on suspicion of massive violations of the Animal Welfare Act. As reported by the news agency APA, citing state authorities, a routine inspection found hundreds of pigs either dead or in such poor health that they could only be euthanized. The responsible official veterinarian described it as one of the most serious cases ever documented in the region.
