Vienna, July 21, 2026

Economics Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) sharply rejected on Tuesday the remarks attributed to Vienna Chamber of Commerce President Walter Ruck from a leaked meeting transcript, while pressure on Ruck grows from industry, the Vienna People's Party, and the opposition.

Background: The Leaked Transcripts

Ever since the news magazine "profil" and the "Kronen Zeitung" published initial excerpts on Friday and further excerpts on Monday evening from an allegedly confidential meeting transcript, Walter Ruck has been fighting to hold on to his position at the helm of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. The recordings, whose authenticity has not been confirmed by a Ruck spokesperson but is described as secured by the publishing media, are said to relate to the turn of the year 2025 to 2026. According to them, Ruck allegedly spoke openly about patronage deals within his own party, the ÖVP, made sexist remarks about women, and described industry representatives from Upper Austria as "degenerate."
