Vienna, July 20, 2026

The publication of a presumably confidential transcript of a conversation has triggered a leadership crisis within Vienna's ÖVP and calls into question the future of Vienna Chamber of Commerce President Walter Ruck, while ÖVP General Secretary Christian Stocker is demanding consequences.

"Krone" and the news magazine "profil" published last Friday excerpts from a transcript of a conversation that is said to reproduce statements made by Ruck during a trusted gathering. In it, the Chamber of Commerce President is quoted making disparaging remarks about a party official who, in 2025, had withdrawn from running in the Vienna election in favor of one of Ruck's sons. According to the report, Ruck is said to have said verbatim: „Die Margarete [...] hat einen Befehl bekommen, sie hat salutiert und hat gesagt: Okay, ich verzichte." And further: „Und hat meinen Sohn vorgeschlagen und hat für ihn gekämpft." The person affected, the Döbling ÖVP politician Margarete Kriz-Zwittkovits, denied in a statement disseminated via the Wirtschaftsbund that she had ever been approached by Ruck on this matter.
