The Vienna Red Cross opened a Cooling Center on Thursday in the Huma Eleven shopping center in Vienna-Simmering, which opened its doors earlier than planned because of the current heat wave.

At a press event on Thursday, representatives of the Vienna Red Cross presented the offering. The air-conditioned room at the Huma Eleven shopping center has been available as a place to seek refuge on hot days since the beginning of July, the Red Cross announced. The location was chosen deliberately: "Das Einkaufszentrum ist an heißen Tagen ohnehin schon beliebt", said Sabine Dreschkay, center manager at "Huma Eleven". The aim is to reach people who are out and about anyway.

Georg Geczek, state rescue commander of the Vienna Red Cross, explained the concept behind the Cooling Centers. Staff from the Red Cross are on hand to provide advice, Geczek added. He called on people to bring their families along as well: the concept is "soziale Wärme in gekühlten Räumen". This is intended to create a meeting place for young and old that goes far beyond mere cooling.
